چکیده

When making clinical decisions, practitioners need to rely on the most relevant evidence available. However, accessing a vast body of medical evidence and confronting the issue of information overload, can be challenging and time consuming. This paper proposes an effective summarizer for medical evidence by utilizing both UMLS and WordNet. Given a clinical query and a set of relevant abstracts, we aim to generate a fluent, well-organized, and compact summary that answers the query. Analysis via ROUGE metrics shows that using WordNet as a generalpurpose lexicon helps to capture the concepts not covered by the UMLS Metathesaurus, and hence significantly increases the summarization performance. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated by conducting a set of experiments over a specialized evidence-based medicine (EBM) corpus which has been gathered and annotated for the purpose of biomedical text summarization.

Unsupervised Monolingual and Bilingual Word-Sense Disambiguation of Medical Documents using UMLS

This paper describes techniques for unsupervised word sense disambiguation of English and German medical documents using UMLS. We present both monolingual techniques which rely only on the structure of UMLS, and bilingual techniques which also rely on the availability of parallel corpora. The best results are obtained using relations between terms given by UMLS, a method which achieves 74% prec...

JUFIT: A Configurable Rule Engine for Filtering and Generating New Multilingual UMLS Terms

We here describe JuFiT, an easily adjustable rule engine which allows to filter non-natural terms (i.e., ones usually not occurring in running citation texts) from the Umls metathesaurus and even adds new terms to the UMLS (by rewriting non-natural terms). Unlike previous attempts (with MetaMap or Casper), JuFiT serves multilingual purposes in that it runs for English, Spanish, French, German a...

A Comparative Study on Concept Representation between the UMLS and the Clinical Terms in Korean Medical Records

The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) is a rich source of knowledge in the biomedical domain. In this paper, we evaluated the coverage of UMLS as compared with Korean medical terms and identified differences in concept representation between two vocabulary sets. We measured the concept coverage by mapping clinical terms extracted from the discharge records of Seoul National University Hosp...
